Since the beginning of the devastating floods that have hit the southern region, especially in Blantyre, my heart has been broken and more towards the people of chilobwe. I grew up in chilobwe and have other relatives and friends living there.

When news came out that families are missing and many feared dead my heart broke and I was not at peace. Today together with Jescar Mponda - Miss Malawi 2022 , we visited the camp to cheer up the victims, donate relief materials and offer my condolences to all those that have lost their friends and family.

I met mothers, fathers, children and grandparents that are desperately in need of all the support they can get.

I also visited Manja camp, situated at manja primary school. This camp has a lot of the displaced families that need both physical as well as mental support. An organization called Nditha organized psychological support services for the victims and their children to help them cope during this tough period. Manja camp was particularly special to me because I did my primary school there and the memories were so vivid. I took time to play with the kids just to lighten up the mood and offer play therapy.

With the little we had we shared and cheered them up. And I am grateful for everyone that has been helping and others that have helped these people. Before anything else we are first Malawians, and at the core of our being is our warmth in difficult times such as these.

Malawi will be hosting a high level conference for ministers responsible for health , water and sanitation from over 40 countries across the African continent. The conference will run from the 9th to 10th March 2023. As such therefore we took time this morning to interface with various hotels and lodges at which our guests shall be accommodated. It is imperative that we maintain high standards in the tourism sector as we deliver a warm hearted service to our visitors.

Today I had a meeting with this inspiring young woman. I couldn’t help but notice how passionate she is with nature and the outdoors. She has been to so many amazing places in this country. So as the Minister of Tourism I decided to spend some time with her and understand the drive behind her work. Honestly I was amazed. I look forward to working with her and promoting our tourism locally as well as globally. If not us then who? Who will tell stories of this beautiful country?

Today I kickstarted my role as the Minister of Tourism by presiding over the Hand-over ceremony of Infrastructure at Lake Malawi National Park, Cape Maclear.

Tourism falls under pillar three of the MW2063, Urbanization. We want to have world-class urban centres and tourism hubs across the country, with requisite modern socio-economic amenities. Lake Malawi National park is a gem and treasure to behold. A catalyst for development as far as the Pilar number 3 of the MW2063 is concerned.

For instance Lake Malawi National Park is the first freshwater national park and best snorkeling destination in the world, first national park to allow people to live within it, it has over 700 species of fresh water fish and it’s a World Heritage Site. This is mind blowing.

The park however, has not been fully branded as a world class tourist site. So many things were broken here. I am now pleased to note that:
• We now have a state-of-the-art boat to deal with the challenge of lack of proper water transport to carry out law enforcement patrols in the face of encroachment and illegal fishing which are negatively affecting the integrity of this Park.
• the gate to make sure that there is no seepage of revenue,
• but also, infrastructure intended to promoted education and tourism of this park. This complementarity is critical in the management of this park which has the potential for tourism.

On behalf of the Government of Malawi I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the AfDB for the support they have given to us through the ministry in this regard.

I wrapped up the meeting by charging my officials at the ministry that it is high time the locals, our people, be the primary beneficiaries to these destinations. The beauty, entertainment and comfort that these places provide should be experienced by the average citizen and the communities that surround these sites.

Until we are fully satiated with our tourism then can we gladly share with the rest of the world. It is time that we open these places to the common Malawian who can share the experiences with their families and then share with Africa and the rest of the world. If we can not tell the story then who?

As part of our efforts to serve the country and its citizens better, the Ministry of Labour is introducing Toll Free lines for all Labour and skills related matters requiring our urgent attention, particularly issues concerning child Labour, Illegal migration, and Workers disputes.

Did you know, Bonya can be a pesticide?

Meet Clement Taona, of Nthawi Farms. Clement is a 100 % organic farmer, meaning no pesticides or chemical fertilizers are used on his farm.

Clement started his farming business from scratch and has now 74 acres of farm land, a farm house, maize mill and a demonstration farm where people learn modern agriculture.

He is also an employer of 5 Graduates from LUANAR that manage his farm operations in horticulture, animal production, and land management. Aside from that he has over 70 permanent employees currently working on the farm in different departments.

His idea of using organic fertilizer and bio char is what is most unique about him. He is a marvel and a true inspiration. The embodiment of agriculture commercialization and industrialization the Malawian way.
