Today, together with officials from Ministry Labour responded to a call to action from Lilongwe Girls Secondary School. The school reached out to well wishers for support of their Home Economics Students by donating Sewing Machines. My ministry has donated sewing machines to the school in response to this call. I was particularly moved by the school’s efforts to offer the sewing class under Home Economics subject to students with different disabilities. Therefore this donation is pivotal to the ministry‘s goals in pushing the technical and vocational skills uptake among girls as well as social inclusion. I got to pose with some students who wore their own designs and paraded them for us to appreciate. And it is my wish to see the school produce some uniforms from their Home Economics department. In addition, my ministry sees this as an opportunity to motivate the girls in Home Economics with this donation. Not only that we encouraged the students to see fashion and design as a career path as they pursue their studies. Our technical colleges are at the moment offering Tailoring and design courses to offer continuity from the secondary school education. The Malawi government will not stop here, through our ministry and technical colleges we will support the school to pursue the TEVET agenda.
